Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. About 90% (or 9 out of 10) of all lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. Even smoking a few cigarettes a day or smoking occasionally increases the risk of lung cancer.* Cigar and pipe smoking also increase risk.

People who quit smoking reduce their risk of lung cancer and other cancers and improve their overall health. Ten years after you quit smoking, your risk for dying from lung cancer drops by half.
